Sir Ray Avery is a successful Pharmaceutical Scientist, a founding member of the Auckland University School of Medicine, Department of Clinical Pharmacology and former Technical Director of Douglas Pharmaceuticals who, over the past thirty years, has made a major contribution in the development of New Zealand’s Pharmaceutical industry.

It is Ray’s groundbreaking work in the developing world that has brought him respect and recognition internationally. As Technical Advisor to the Fred Hollows Foundation, Ray designed, and commissioned two state of the art Intraocular Lens Laboratories in Nepal and Eritrea.

In 2003, Ray founded Medicine Mondiale and using his contacts, and charisma he enlists the help of other scientists, and social entrepreneurs to work with him.

Ray invented the Acuset IV Flow Controller which was a finalist in the 2008, Saatchi & Saatchi World Changing Ideas Award, and Proteinforte a revolutionary treatment for Protein Energy Malnutrition and a low cost infant incubator specifically designed for use in the developing world.

His work has been recognised by his peers and he has received numerous awards including a Rotary Paul Harris Medal, The Bayer Research and Development Innovator Award 2008, World Class New Zealand Award for Biotechnology 2009,TBWA Disruption Award 2010, Kiwi Bank New Zealander of the year 2010 and The Blake Leadership Medal 2010.

Ray is also the Patron of the Non Resident Nepali Association of New Zealand a position previously held by Sir Edmund Hillary and is the chair of the World Class New Zealand advisory committee.

In 2011 Ray was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit Knight of the Grand Companion in the New Year Honours for services to philanthropy. Ray's book Rebel with a Cause is on its seventh reprint.

Alex Olsen

Alex started with Espersen in 2007 and has since developed Espersen’s Sustainability and Governance initiatives throughout their supply chains. Prior to this position, Alex spent twelve year with McDonald’s Europe in quality assurance, purchasing and finally as one of the pioneers in establishing the McDonald's Agricultural Assurance Program. He also worked seven years as a microbiologist at the Danish Meat Research Institute. 

Alex has a Masters in Food Science from University of Copenhagen and a Bachelor of Environmental Management from the Technical University of Denmark. Alex represents Espersen within various industry organisations including the AIPCE-CEP Sustainability Committee, the GSSI Process Expert Working Group and the thriving UK Sustainability and Ethical Common Language Groups (forums where industry, NGO's, and Government meet to address fisheries issues). In addition he participates regularly in meetings and workshops within different working groups within the EU framework.  

Alex has been a member of the Technical Advisory Board for Marine Stewardship Council since 2013 and a member of the Baltic Sea Advisory Council since 2007.

Cameron Bagrie

Chief Economist, ANZ Bank New Zealand

Cameron Bagrie has worked as an economist in New Zealand for 20 years, including 10 as Chief Economist of ANZ New Zealand. Cameron leads a team of economists and strategists working in ANZ's financial markets operation. The responsibilities of the team include the forecasting of the New Zealand economy, analysis of New Zealand monetary policy as well as the forecasting and strategy work associated with fixed income research. On top of this he provides considerable strategic input to clients and the bank. Cameron travels extensively providing economic and financial advice to ANZ's customers in New Zealand as well as overseas. He appears regularly in the media. Cameron has previously held posts at the National Bank of New Zealand and New Zealand Treasury. He gained a BCom from University of Otago and a MCom from the University of Canterbury. Outside of work he enjoys all sports, Central Otago Pinot Noir, and spending time with his family.

Jodie Campbell joins us as a consultant, specialising in the design, development and implementation of sustainability, traceability and certification programmes for primary industry.

Her professional experience incorporates strategic, technical and operational components of agri-business, particularly within the global seafood supply chain. She has served clients ranging from independent fishermen from remote Russian villages to McDonald’s Corporation in Chicago, USA.  She has also sat on both sides of the regulatory table here in New Zealand. She has represented and advocated on behalf of the seafood industry, including serving as an industry expert in Parliamentary Select Committee hearings and the High Court of New Zealand.  She later served as a Principal Advisor for MPI. She is passionate about the sustainable growth of the industry, particularly on a strategic and sector wide level, and the collective efforts we can pursue to support the reputation and premiumisation of New Zealand seafood.

Jodie has a B/A in Mathematics/Statistics and Biology from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, USA. She owns her own consulting company, JansenCampbell, based in Wellington.

Anne has over 25 years’ experience in international roles including Public Affairs, Stakeholder Engagement, Traceability, Eco labelling and Sustainability spanning South East Asia, Europe, India, China, US and Oceania.

She has experience in dealing with diverse groups, geographies and cultures around the globe; including government bodies and agencies, policy makers, media, social, environmental and animal welfare related NGOs; consumer interest groups; industry associations, financial institutions, consumer goods manufacturers, retailers, private sector and international standard setting organizations such as ISEAL, United Nations and UNDP.  

Among her roles prior to her current position with MSC Anne was as Global Communications Director of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil and Managing Director of world’s largest public relations consultancy, Weber Shandwick Worldwide.  

During her time at the RSPO, Anne was instrumental in developing strategic commitments for the uptake of certified sustainable palm oil through her work with government, industry associations and retailers in the Netherlands, Belgium, United Kingdom, France, Germany, India and China. She also steered a strategic consumer awareness and education campaign in supporting sustainable production of food commodities along the supply chain.                              

Actively participated in speaker platforms and conferences around the world speaking about certification standards, eco labelling, communications trends and sustainability.  

Anne has won numerous awards for campaigns within the region and has also contributed her perspectives in a book on new digital media environment and its impact to communications trends, which was published in Malaysia and distributed in SEA.

Deborah Roche joined as the Deputy Director General Policy in late February 2013. Prior to joining MPI, Deborah was seconded to the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet for 18 months where she was the advisor on State Services, Better Public Services, Defence, Sport and Recreation and a member of the Officials Committee on Economic Growth and Infrastructure.

Deborah's previous roles included Deputy Director General Strategy and Systems Performance at the Ministry of Health; Deputy Director Strategy at the Department of Health in the United Kingdom; running the health and social care section of a leading UK think tank; guest lecturer at the London School of Economics and she previously was a sports physiotherapist.

Deborah holds an MSc (London School of Economics), MAppSc (University of South Australia), CertTT (Waikato Polytechnic) and a DipPhys (Auckland Institute of Technology).

Dr Susan Marshall is an industrial biochemist specialising in the development of new marine products and the efficient large-scale processes to make them. She is Science Group Leader for the Seafood Processing and Marine Products Group at Plant & Food Research (PFR).

Sue is programme leader of MBIE Export Marine Products, an industry/PFR/university collaboration; represents PFR on the board of MBIE Bioprocessing Research Alliance; and leads commercial product development projects in the seafood industry. Her research group has a wide focus covering seafood safety and shelf-life extension, through to development of high-value natural catalysts, cosmetic, nutraceutical and biomaterial products, and more traditional by-products processing such as rendering.

Sue is responsible for development of the PFR Bioprocessing Pilot Plant (located in Nelson), an essential tool in transfer of science from the laboratory to commercial product development.

Iain Hosie is co-founder and CEO of Revolution Fibres Ltd, based in Auckland New Zealand. Revolution Fibres is a global leader in nanofibre production and the creation of advanced textile products. Director General, Department of Conservation

Lou Sanson was appointed Director-General of the Department of Conservation in September 2013. DOC is responsible for managing 8.5 million hectares of public land (approximately 30% of New Zealand’s landmass), 44 marine reserves covering almost 1.28 million hectares, and 6 marine mammal sanctuaries (covering nearly 2.4 million hectares). DOC manages over 14,000 km of track over 13,000 structures, 967 huts, 324 campsites and 487 areas.

Prior to this appointment, Lou was Chief Executive of Antarctica New Zealand – responsible for developing, managing, and executing New Zealand’s activities in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.

Before this Lou was at DOC as Conservator for Southland Conservancy in charge of Fiordland National Park, Stewart Island and the Sub-Antarctic World Heritage Area. He also led the establishment of Rakiura National Park and some of the world’s largest island eradication projects and helped establish a network of marine reserves in Fiordland.

A keen outdoor person, Lou enjoys natural history, hiking, ski-touring, diving and photography.

Graham has been involved in conservation and wildlife management and research since 2002, including extensive work with various aspects of southern ecosystems and seabirds, forest birds and invasive mammals.

For the past nine years seabird conservation research has been Graham’s focus, both on land and at sea, with albatrosses and petrels. Robust population estimates and demographic studies of threatened species are an important focus. As is the quantification of incidental seabird mortality in commercial fisheries, along with participating in the development of innovative mitigation measures to reduce incidental seabird mortality in commercial fisheries. Graham’s work as a commercial fisherman prior to embarking on a career in wildlife management brings a unique set of skills to working with the fishing industry.

Graham has extensive experience conducting long periods of field work in extremely remote locations, both on land and at sea. His philosophy is to become involved in finding collaborative solutions to challenging conservation issues for governments, NGOs and private industry whether it is in commercial fisheries, agri-forestry, wind-farms, private land or the conservation estate.

Manager Fisheries Science

Shelton Harley joined the Ministry for Primary Industries in January 2015 as Manager Fisheries Science. He has had two previous stints with the Ministry of Fisheries in 1998 as a new graduate and from 2004-2008 as a scientist.
Shelton’s career has involved working with fisheries in Atlantic Canada and Alaska, with the largest part of his career to date spent leading the team of scientists assessing the world’s largest tuna stocks – those found in the western and central Pacific Ocean.
Coming from the fishing community of Whakatane, Shelton grew up with up with a strong appreciation of the value of fisheries to tangata whenua, commercial, and recreational fishers and this is something that drives him in his work.

Craig has extensive experience in governance across a wide range of sectors. He is Chair of Ngai Tahu Seafood, Chair of Wellington Zoo, a director on Aotearoa Fisheries (Moana New Zealand), and the Sealord Group, an independent director on New Zealand Maori Tourism, and a trustee of Poutama Trust.

Past roles show a long involvement in the Fisheries and Seafood sector including being the past Chair of the NZ Seafood Standards Council, as well as serving on the board of the Fishing Industry Board, and umerous stakeholder organisations.

He maintains a strong interest in governance, and Maori collaboration.

He was project leader for the Tuhono Whenua: Red Meat Coalition.

He has previously served on the Boards of Airways New Zealand, NIWA, the Trade Liberalisation Network, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, the Carter and Spencer Group, Foodstuffs Fresh, and also as a Commissioner (and Deputy Chair) with the Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission (Te Ohu Kai Moana).

Craig graduated from Otago University with a Masters in Zoology, and is a proud alumni of the Te Hono group (class of 2015).

He is author of Roughy on the Rise, the story of New Zealand’s most controversial fishery.

As both leader of New Zealand’s peak seafood body and a keen recreational fisherman, Tim has a vested interest in the state of our marine environment, working with numerous stakeholders to shape an industry that is sustainable, best practice and innovative.

Bill Ralston's career as a journalist and broadcaster, working in television, radio, print and online in New Zealand spans more than thirty years. His strongly expressed views have made him a controversial, but always interesting broadcasting figure.

Ralston has been at the forefront of some of television's most innovative moments; good and bad. Aside from the gonzo satire of Nightline, Ralston wrangled politicos, journos and other opinionated hard heads over multiple seasons of talk show The Ralston Group. After leaving TV3 he spent three years hosting successful arts and media show Backch@t, and editing Metro magazine. Much like Ralston, the programmes were irreverent, informative, sometimes intelligent and always provocative.

Ralston left TVNZ in January 2007. Since then he has worked as a freelance journalist and columnist for The Listener, The NZ Herald, and Radio Live host. He has also had cameo roles in satirical show The Jaquie Brown Diaries and who could forget Bill in the opening scenes of Peter Jackson classic Braindead.

Bill and his wife Janet Wilson now run their own communication company which specialises in media training, political strategies and crisis management.
